# 1.4 Program FAQs (Oklahoma)

### **Program Overview FAQs**

**Q: What is OpenEd?**

**A:** OpenEd is a tuition-free public school program that provides a personalized education experience for students. Our program helps students gain valuable tech and entrepreneurship skills that will allow them to be successful in college, career, and life. We believe that students with a strong foundation in creativity, innovation, technology, and business are poised to change the world for good.

**Q: Is there a fee to participate?**

**A:** The OpenEd program is 100% free to all participating families.

**Q: Is OpenEd an online public, private, or charter school?**

**A:** Neither! OpenEd is a personalized education *program* administered by schools (public, private and charter). Students in the OpenEd Oklahoma program are full-time public school students and are assigned to a school of enrollment.

**Q: Are the classes all online?**

**A:** That’s up to you! Classes can include your choice of online, in-person, and/or hands-on educational resources.

**Q: How and when did the OpenEd program begin?**

**A:** In 2009, a group of passionate parents, certified teachers, administrators, technology enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, and business leaders partnered with public schools to create a new, innovative education model focused on creating unique, personalized educational experiences for every child.

**Q: How can I ensure my student has access to the kinds of educational resources they’d receive in a traditional school?**

**A:** Once your student is enrolled through OpenEd, you’ll receive access to a wallet of funds that can be used to support your child’s unique learning plan. As long as a purchase directly supports a subject or goal in your student’s individualized education plan, you can use your wallet funds to cover it—just like a traditional school might provide textbooks, software, or lab kits.

**Q: Why focus on technology and entrepreneurship?**

**A:** We believe America was founded and thrives on the principles of innovation and entrepreneurship. We also believe a strong foundation in technology is critical for current and future success in college, career, and life.

**Q: Will my child have a teacher?**

**A:** Yes! Every student has access to a state-certified teacher who can provide guidance and support to help them progress during the year. Teachers review your child’s weekly learning logs and provide positive feedback and ideas to enhance learning.

**Q: What are weekly learning logs?**

**A:** A weekly learning log is a short summary of the student’s educational activities. It is how students demonstrate active participation in the program and serves as an official attendance record. Weekly learning logs are required and may be submitted by the parent or student via video, Google Docs, a family blog, a digital journal, or simply typing directly onto the provided page. You choose which method is best for you!

**Q: How can I receive personalized, one-on-one guidance from an education expert?**

**A:** Book a consultation with our team [here](https://content.opened.co/consultations?hsLang=en).

You can choose from a Curriculum Consultation (for building or adjusting your student's learning plan) or a Student Success Consultation (for students who need a little extra help - we'll build a plan for real progress).

**Q: How can I set up an account for my student so that they can submit their own learning logs?**

**A:** In your [OpenEd platform](http://opened.co/login), click on the **Family** tab.

Under your student's name, click **Add an email address.**

After you add their email, your student will be able to log into [opened.co/login](http://opened.co/login) using their email address.

Your student will need to request a magic link to log in. This link will be sent to their email address. We currently don't have an option for students to set up their own passwords to log in.

**Q: Which curriculum can I use?**

**A:** We enable parents to use the best curriculum for their unique students, so the universe of options is endless! Learn more about your **[options](https://opened.co/marketplace)**.

**Q: How much involvement is required of the parent?**

**A:** That’s entirely up to you! Depending on the curriculum and classes you choose, your role in supporting your child can vary from subject to subject.

**Q: How do I add another parent/guardian to my OpenEd account?**

**A:** In the OpenEd platform, click on the **Household** tab.

In the top right corner, click on the **Add Parent/Guardian** button.

**Q: How do I find my way around the OpenEd platform?**

**A:** Take a look at our [OpenEd Platform Overview](https://knowledge.opened.co/1.2-opened-platform-overview-oklahoma?hsLang=en) for a quick tour of each page of the platform.

**Q: What if my child struggles with motivation?**

**A:** You’ll be amazed at what happens when a child is allowed to experience a truly personalized education. Finding what works best for each child empowers them to love learning and expand in ways you never thought possible. For additional support, you have access to a state-certified Homeroom Teacher who is available to provide suggestions, ideas, and resources to support your home-centered education.

**Q: Can my child work at their own pace?**

**A:** Yes! Many subjects taken through OpenEd are self-paced, and some provide pacing guidelines. Students earning Early College Credit have specific deadlines for each course.

**Q: Can my child work at a different grade level?**

**A:** OpenEd students are enrolled in the grade level corresponding to their age or previous school enrollment. However, OpenEd students can personalize their schedule and work at a level that best fits their learning abilities.

**Q: Can my child skip a grade or retain a grade?**

**A:** If you'd like your child to either advance or be retained in a grade, our partner schools offer a petition process. During enrollment simply note the grade level your child best fits and provide the requested documentation.

**Q: What if we travel a lot or want to go on a vacation?**

**A:** Awesome! The OpenEd program offers families the freedom and flexibility to travel and recognizes that education can happen anywhere. Learning on the go may look different than a typical school day at home, but the weekly learning logs can summarize educational experiences while traveling. We love to hear what students learn in their travels!

**Q: Where can I access previously recorded videos and webinars?**

**A:** You can browse our extensive video library **[here](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzfHIDt2uKzwEclA94tom_Q)**.

### **Application FAQs**

**Q: When will I find out if my student has been accepted into the program?**

**A:** Most eligible students are accepted immediately after applying. Once accepted, you'll complete enrollment tasks and submit required documents for review. Our team works to process these as quickly as possible, though reviews may take an average of 30 days during busy enrollment periods.

**Q: Will my student be enrolled as soon as I fill out the documentation?**

**A:** We believe families deserve as many educational choices as possible, and our team works closely with our partners to help make those opportunities available. Because enrollment is ultimately subject to partner policies, program requirements, and available capacity, we can't guarantee a student's placement until their enrollment has been officially approved and confirmed. We'll keep you informed every step of the way and communicate as soon as a final decision is made.

**Q: Do you accept new students during the school year?**

**A:** Yes! OpenEd welcomes new students throughout the year. You can enroll in our full-year program or join our mid-year program. Please note, we don’t offer a 1st-semester-only option.

**Q: What grades does OpenEd serve?**

**A:** In Oklahoma, OpenEd serves students in grades K-8.

**Q: What happens if I change my mind after I apply?**

**A:** No problem—submitting an application doesn’t commit you to enrolling. If you decide OpenEd isn’t the right fit, just let us know so we can stop sending reminders about completing your paperwork.

**Q: What if I decide to withdraw after the school year has begun?**

**A:** If you've enrolled and later decide that OpenEd isn’t the right fit, [please email us here.](https://opened.co/contact-form) Our friendly Parent Support team is here to help—sometimes a quick conversation can make all the difference, especially as families adjust to the learning curve of the program.

If you need to withdraw once the school year begins, please review our **[Withdrawal/Repayment Policy](https://opened.co/policies)** guidelines, as early withdrawal may require repayment.

### **Enrollment FAQs**

**Q: What is the Kindergarten age requirement?**

**A:** Oklahoma requires a student to be five years old **on or before September 1st** to enroll in a public school program.

**Q: What counts as Proof of Oklahoma Residency?**

**A:** Our preferred proof of residency for full-year students is an Oklahoma driver's license valid through September 1, 2026 that reflects your current residential address. If you don't have a driver's license, we can also accept a utility bill (dated within the past 60 days) or a rental/lease agreement.

**Q: What if I don’t have my student’s birth certificate? What is an Affidavit of Birth?**

**A:** A notarized [**Affidavit of Birth**](https://knowledge.opened.co/hubfs/Affidavit_of_Birth_-_Oklahoma.pdf?hsLang=en), combined with another proof of age document, can be uploaded to your enrollment tasks.

That will work for 30 days, so be sure to order a certified copy of your student's birth certificate now.

**Q: What does my student need to do to remain enrolled in the program?**

**A:** To remain enrolled in the program, your student will need to submit all of their weekly learning logs.

**Q: Why does my young student need an email address?**

**A:** Every student in the OpenEd program needs an individual, active email account. This is required to access their educational resources.

Please avoid using email addresses from previous schools, as these are often deactivated. For younger students, we recommend setting up a parent-managed email account.

**Q: Why do we need to provide immunization records? Where can I get the Immunization Exemption Form?**

**A:** Students in the OpenEd program are full-time public school students and need to abide by **[state regulations](https://oklahoma.gov/content/dam/ok/en/health/health2/aem-documents/prevention-and-preparedness/immunizations/Guide%20To%20Immunization%20Requirements.pdf)** for immunizations. However, families have options for compliance.

[Here are instructions](https://oklahoma.gov/content/dam/ok/en/health/health2/aem-documents/prevention-and-preparedness/immunizations/IMMY_Exemptions_ENG.pdf) on how to obtain and submit an exemption form for medical, religious, or personal reasons.

### **Wallet Funds FAQs**

Once your student is enrolled through OpenEd, you’ll receive access to a wallet of funds to support their unique learning plan. These funds can be used for educational materials and resources—as long as the purchase directly supports a subject or goal in your student’s individualized education plan. Think of it like how a traditional school might provide textbooks, software, or lab kits—only now *you* choose what best fits your child.

**Q: What is the total wallet funds per student?**

**A:** $2,000 for the full program year.

**Q: What CAN funds be used for?**

**A:** As mentioned above, funds can be used for educational resources that directly support your student’s learning. Things like curriculum, books, online courses, learning tools, and supplies tied to subjects or goals in their plan. Just like a traditional school might provide textbooks or lab kits, you get to choose what works best for your child.

**Q: What CAN'T funds be used for?**

**A:** Items that are not eligible include:

- General household items (like furniture, rent, or cleaning supplies)
- Family vacations (and travel expenses)
- Non-academic extracurriculars (unless they’re part of the approved education plan)
- Non-secular materials and curriculum
- Anything that isn’t clearly tied to your student’s education plan

**Q: What happens if I submit something ineligible?**

**A:** Our team will notify you and explain why it wasn't approved. You’ll have the option to revise and resubmit if appropriate.

**Q: Can I confirm that an item will be eligible for reimbursement before I make a purchase?**

**A:** Absolutely! If your student’s education plan is finalized, we can review your item ahead of time. If it’s not yet finalized, we may not be able to guarantee approval. [Email us here](https://opened.co/contact-form) for our team to review your request.

**Q: Do I have to pay out-of-pocket for resources:**

**A:** Only if you want to! Through OpenEd, you have options.

1. **No out-of-pocket required:** You can select resources through our [Marketplace](https://knowledge.opened.co/3.1-marketplace-overview-oklahoma?hsLang=en), [Rainbow Resource](https://knowledge.opened.co/3.2-amazon-and-rainbow-resource-oklahoma?hsLang=en), or [Amazon](https://knowledge.opened.co/3.2-amazon-and-rainbow-resource-oklahoma?hsLang=en). Purchases through these avenues will be purchased on your behalf using your student’s wallet funds.
2. **Prefer to shop yourself?** You’re welcome to buy eligible items out of pocket and request reimbursement, as long as the purchase aligns with your student’s education plan.

**Q: When can I begin purchasing my student's curriculum?**

**A:** You can begin purchasing educational materials during the **Purchase Window**, which runs from **April 1 to March 31** of the program year.

**Q: When can I submit Requests for Reimbursement?**

**A:**

**Full-Year Program:** September 25 – April 30

**Mid-Year Program:** January 4 – April 30

**Q: How many times can I submit a reimbursement request per year?**

**A:** As many times as you need! If you're buying materials throughout the year, we recommend submitting receipts as you go to stay organized and avoid losing them.

**Q: How long does it take to receive reimbursement?**

**A:** Reimbursement requests are reviewed within three weeks of submission.

**Q: How will I receive my reimbursement?**

**A:** Approved reimbursements are deposited directly to you via your preferred method via bank transfer. Be sure your payment method is up-to-date to avoid delays.

**Q: Can I use my funds for non-secular curriculum?**

**A:** No, but you can purchase **any** curriculum or resources that align with your student's education plan on your own.
