1.9 Assessment Overview (Utah 25-26)

Your student’s participation in Utah’s statewide assessments helps to ensure that all learners have access to a high-quality education. Statewide testing provides valuable information that helps improve instruction, allocate resources, and support student success.

These assessments are based on the Utah Core Standards and the WIDA English Language Development Standards, which define what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. To learn more, please visit the USBE State Assessments page.

Testing sites will be secured by OpenEd; your family will be contacted to choose a date and a location from designated sites.

How To Find Assessment Info In-Platform

Note: We're still working on adding all of our assessment info into the platform, so you might not see everything right away.

After logging into the OpenEd platform, click on the Assessments menu option from the lefthand sidebar.

On that page, you'll see a tile of information for each assessment that your student needs to take to remain in compliance with the program. Click on a tile to see an expanded view of that info.

 

Each tile includes a short description, the dates of the assessment's testing windows, and details on whether your student already has a testing date scheduled.

 

Don't worry - we'll do all the heavy lifting

Our team will partner with you to find a testing date that works. After that's set, we'll add the dates into the platform for you.

After your student's assessment results are ready, we'll upload them on this same page. It's a one-stop shop for everything you need to know!

Opt-outs Made Easy

For some assessments (but not all), OpenEd parents have the option to opt their student out of testing.

In those cases, you can opt out directly through the platform. Just click on an assessment's info tile, then scroll to the bottom; you'll see a dropdown menu that lets you choose whether your student will participate.

 

As long as the testing window hasn't passed, you can change this response at any time.

Assessments That Affect Utah Students

Grades K-3

Acadience tests are indicators of a student’s overall reading and math proficiency.

Topics in Acadience Reading:

  • Reviewing letters and sounds (K-1)

  • Nonsense words (1-2)

  • Reading a passage (1-MOY and EOY) (2-3)

  • Retell of passage just read (1-3)

  • Filling in the correct word when given 3 words to choose from in a sentence (3)

Topics in Acadience Math:

  • Reviewing numbers (K-1)

  • Recognizing which one has “more” (K-1)

  • Filling in missing numbers in a sequence (K-1)

  • Math Fact Sheets (1-3)

  • Math Computation Sheets (2-3)

 

This assessment is given three times during the school year:

BOY: Aug. 25-Sept. 26

MOY: Dec. 1-19

EOY: Apr. 15-June 15

Virtual

The testing session lasts approximately 30 minutes for grades K-2 and 45 minutes for grade 3.

RISE (Summative)

Note: OpenEd will begin collecting assessment info, including opt-out preferences, in November.

Grades 3-8

The RISE (Summative) assessment is a standardized assessment that evaluates student proficiency and is given at the end of the school year.

Virtual, unless the student has OSSE, we will coordinate with the school to make the arrangement for in-person.

RISE assessments do not have a set time limit. Although most students complete testing within an average timeframe, we are happy to accommodate students who need longer testing sessions.

 

Average time:

 

  • Math: 90 minutes

  • English/Language Arts: 90 minutes

  • Science: 60 minutes

  • Writing: 45 minutes

 

Utah Aspire Plus

Grades 9-10

The Utah Aspire Plus assessment is a hybrid of ACT Aspire and Utah Core test items. It’s a computer delivered, fixed form end-of-grade-level high school assessment for students in 9 and 10.

Utah Aspire Plus is atimed assessment for 9th & 10th Graders that takes place in one sitting (4 hours):

 

Math: 75 minutes

Reading: 75 minutes

Science: 60 minutes

 

ACT

Grade 11

The ACT test is a curriculum-based education and career planning tool for high school students that assesses the mastery of college readiness standards.

Students who are enrolled as juniors in a public high school are eligible to take the state-funded 11th-grade ACT one time.

In-person

 

The ACT is administered in-person at a secure testing location. Most OpenEd students will take the ACT at their local boundary high school which the assessment team will coordinate.

ACT is a timed assessment for 11th Graders that takes place in one sitting (135 minutes):

 

English: 45 minutes (75 questions)

Math: 60 minutes (60 questions)

Reading: 35 minutes (40 questions)
