1.9 MAST Overview (Montana 25-26)

The MAST assessment (Montana Aligned to Standards Through-Year) provides a consistent picture of student proficiency and progress in English Language Arts and mathematics according to the Montana Content Standards.

This assessment is administered three times through the school year to assess students' grade-level achievements.

Q: Which students need to take the MAST assessment?

A: All students in grades 3-8 will need to take the MAST assessment.

Q: Can I opt my student out?

A: No, there is no opt-out option available.

Q: What dates will this assessment be administered?

A: The MAST assessment is administered three times throughout the year; OpenEd will administer the first testing window no sooner than November 2025.

We'll give you at least two weeks' notice before your family is expected to test; there will be more than one week available for scheduling the test, too. We've got your back!

The two later testing windows will take place between Jan 12 - Mar 6, 2026 and Mar 30 - May 22,2026.

Q: Is this assessment virtual or in-person?

A: This assessment will be in-person.

Q: What should my student expect during the test?

A: The MAST assessment will take place over one testing session that covers both English Language Arts and mathematics.

Each of the two parts of that session (English Language Arts and math) typically takes under thirty minutes to complete.

The English Language Arts section will include 18-24 questions; the mathematics section will include 9-13 questions.

Your student will log into the KITE Student Portal using a secure browser to take this assessment - login information will be provided at the time of testing.

Q: How should I and my student prepare?

A: Before the test, we'll provide you with some optional resources to review ahead of time, including a list of standards for your student to familiarize themselves with.

Your student can also take a practice test by visiting https://student-testlet.kiteaai.org. Use the username tech.demo and the password MAZE8.

This practice test includes sample item types that will appear on the MAST testlets.

Q: How can I access my student's results?

A: You'll be able to access your student's results through the KITE Parent Portal.

Q: Does a legal guardian need to attend the testing session?

A: No, any adult may accompany a student. Carpooling is totally fine!

For ELA, all grades: An informational testate and a literary testate.

3rd grade Math:

  • Concepts of multiplication and division

4th grade Math:

  • Place value in the base ten system

  • Addition and subtraction algorithms

  • Extend concepts of multiplication
