# 2.6 Checkpoint Learning Logs (Texas)
**Note:** These checkpoint logs only apply to students in **grades 3-8**!
If your student is in grades K-2, then this info doesn't apply to them - they won't have any checkpoint logs.
In one learning log every quarter for students in grades 3-8, we incorporate a quick check-in about how your student is doing in math and language arts.
**Why:** This helps our team anticipate any support that your student might need to feel prepared to take the [STAAR assessments](https://knowledge.opened.co/6.3-staar-assessments-texas-26-27?hsLang=en) next Spring.
### **What To Expect**
On a checkpoint learning log, your student will be asked to check their progress in math and language arts in one of two ways:
**1.** By taking a short math and language arts diagnostic through [Exact Path](https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1Km0wBMli0Wd40eMplV77x2hw7VmE_empaj7iwsVwC6o/edit?slide=id.g3f6046c4d91_0_21&utm_campaign=21641602-Parent%20Newsletter&utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-8-mr4y3nwjV_nz6VM1hKlQhg68trTqImz4H9CPluTznPUl9Q5cktMmcCo-tiZnyLHPIHgv#slide=id.g3f6046c4d91_0_21), a free resource available through the **Library** tab of your [OpenEd platform](http://opened.co/login?utm_campaign=21641602-Parent%20Newsletter&utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-8-mr4y3nwjV_nz6VM1hKlQhg68trTqImz4H9CPluTznPUl9Q5cktMmcCo-tiZnyLHPIHgv).
**2.** By completing another measure of your student's current skills in math and language arts using a tool of your choice *(like IXL Diagnostic, Khan Academy Course Challenge, or whatever curriculum-based tool works best for your family)*.
Here's what the learning log will look like:
The "Progress Check" dropdown menu lets your student tell their teacher how they checked their progress (either through an Exact Path diagnostic, or through another at-home way).
The "Confidence Check" dropdown lets your student tell their teacher how they're feeling about the subject:
#### **How To Check Your Student's Progress Through Exact Path**
To access Exact Path, log into your [OpenEd platform](http://opened.co/login) and click on the **Library** tab.
From the **Exact Path** tile, click on the **Show Credentials** button to view your student's username and password. Then, click on the **Access Product** button.
That'll bring you to a login page for Clever, which is the platform that allows you to access Exact Path.

#### **How To Check Your Student's Progress With Another Tool**
Prefer to check your student's progress with a tool other than Exact Path? No problem!
On their learning log, just make sure that they upload the results from whichever tool you decide to use.
### FAQs
**Q: Can we excuse this learning log?**
**A: No - The checkpoint learning log is required and cannot be excused.**
To make things a little simpler for your family, we removed the regular learning log requirement for the week that the checkpoint learning log is due.
Please know that the goal is simply to help you and our team understand where your student is in their learning as we prepare for the STAAR tests this year.
We want to make sure your student has the support they need to feel confident and successful!
**Q: Will we be required to change curricula or make changes to our learning plans if my student doesn't do well on their diagnostics?**
**A: No!**
The word diagnostic sounds so significant, but really this checkpoint is very low-key.
We're fulfilling an important commitment we have made to our school partners in Texas by building in ways to check on student preparation for the required STAAR assessments later.
No matter what our teachers observe here, **you will not be required to change your curriculum or your current learning plan.**
If we notice that your student may benefit from additional support in Math or English Language Arts (ELA), we may reach out with optional resources such as Daily Learning Labs or Learning Pods to help them grow.
**Q: What qualifies as an at-home check-in?**
**A:** You can use any check-in that works well for your family! Some examples include:
- A written assessment from the back of your curriculum book
- A printed assessment or worksheet found online
- An IXL diagnostic
- An online quiz or assessment
- Another Math or ELA assessment of your choice
***What do I need to submit?*** Simply include a picture of your student's completed check-in in the learning log submission. You will need to submit **one Math check-in and one ELA check-in**.
**Q: Does my student have to complete both the Reading and Language Arts Exact Path diagnostics?**
**A: No!**
If you choose to complete the learning log using Exact Path, your student only needs to complete **one of the available Language Arts diagnostic options**. Your student will also need to complete the Math diagnostic.
**Q: What are some other options for finding my child's current learning level?**
**A:** There are several flexible ways to get a better understanding of your student's current learning level! You can choose an option that fits your family's curriculum and learning style.
Here are a few ideas:
- **IXL:** Use diagnostic tools or skill assessments to identify strengths and areas for growth.
- **Curriculum assessments:** Use chapter tests, unit reviews, or assessments included with your current curriculum.
- **Online assessments:** Find a Math or ELA quiz that matches your student's learning level.
- **Printed assessments:** Use a worksheet or assessment printed from a trusted educational resource.
- **Teacher support:** Reach out to our team if you would like help deciding which check-in option might work best for your student.
**Q: What is Exact Path, and why is it an option?**
**A:** Exact Path is a **free resource available to all OpenEd students**! It includes quarterly diagnostic assessments that adapt to your student's responses to help us understand their current learning level. After completing the diagnostics, students receive a personalized learning path based on their individual strengths and areas for growth.
Exact Path is a great companion to any curriculum your family is already using. We encourage families to explore this resource because it helps us better understand where your student is academically and provides additional opportunities to enrich their learning at home.
We know the adaptive diagnostics can take about an hour to complete, and we understand that can feel like a lot! The good news is that **your student does not have to complete the diagnostics all in one sitting**. They can work through them over time in manageable sessions that fit your family's schedule.
**Q: What accommodations can I provide for my student during these diagnostics?**
**A:** We want your student to feel comfortable and supported while completing their diagnostics! Since these check-ins are designed to help us understand your student's current learning level, we encourage families to provide support and flexibility as needed.
Here are some ways you can help your student:
- **Read questions aloud:** Help read directions or questions aloud when needed.
- **Take breaks:** Allow your student to pause, stretch, or take a short break when they need one.
- **Use reference tools:** Students may use a dictionary or thesaurus when appropriate.
- **Spread it out:** Complete the diagnostics over multiple days or shorter sessions instead of all at once.
- **Use scratch paper:** Encourage your student to use scratch paper to work through math problems, show their thinking, or solve calculations.
- **Create a comfortable space:** Find a quiet, comfortable place where your student can focus and work at their own pace.
Remember, these check-ins are meant to help us understand your student's strengths and identify areas where additional support may be helpful. They are not about getting every question right! Please choose the supports that work best for your family while allowing your student to do their best independently. We appreciate your partnership in helping your student feel confident and successful!
