3.7 Educational Experience FAQs (OpenEd Academy)
Q: What does it mean for my student to have a "homeroom teacher?" What should I expect from that relationship?
A: Your student's homeroom teacher is here to support your family's academic vision and keep you informed about your student's progress in their classes.
Their level of involvement in your student's weekly learning is dependent on both your student's grade and your family's personal preference.
For example, along with scheduling seasonal consultations to check in and offer support, homeroom teachers for students in grades K-3 host an optional daily morning meeting where students can participate in fun community-building activities and connect with friends.
Homeroom teachers for students in grades 4-12 offer a similar optional meeting, but on a weekly basis.
All homeroom teachers update out a weekly bulletin board including important links, upcoming events, and other helpful reminders. They'll also regularly send your family a progress report (weekly, monthly, quarterly - the cadence is up to you).
Q: What if my student needs additional support? Will my student's homeroom teacher offer tutoring sessions?
A: While your student's homeroom teacher is a great resource for collaborating on your family's gameplan for the school year, they won't offer individual tutoring sessions.
Instead, OpenEd Academy is proud to offer free, live tutoring from September through May led by a team of certified teachers.
If your student needs help with a concept or skill, you can sign up for a virtual tutoring session from OpenEd’s in-house tutors through the Tutoring tile in your student’s library.
From that tile, click on the link under the Access Instructions. That will take you to a form where you can fill in a few details about what kind of support your student needs.

Q: What is expected of me, the parent, throughout my student's experience with OpenEd Academy?
A: Our team's top priority is uplifting your vision for your student's personalized education. While you and your student's homeroom teacher may collaborate on academic goals, you are in the driver's seat of your student's experience.
For that reason, we won't give you a laundry list of checkboxes that you need to tick off every day. We do ask that you please remain communicative with your student's homeroom teacher - if they send you an email to check in or update you on your student's progress, they'd be grateful for a response letting them know you got the message. We want to make sure we're providing the level of support that your family needs!
Q: Why does my student have a separate instructor for their class? How is an instructor different from their homeroom teacher?
A: All of the courses that your student signs up for through the OpenEd Academy marketplace will have an assigned instructor - meaning a teacher who will review their classwork, hold office hours for content-specific questions, and offer other support related to that course.
This teacher is separate from your student's dedicated homeroom teacher.
If your student has a question about a specific course, their instructor is the right person to talk to.
Q: What are Flex Fridays? How can my student join?
A: Flex Fridays are weekly virtual gatherings where OpenEd learners come together to join breakout rooms packed with different activities.
To sign up, head over to the Marketplace menu option through the OpenEd platform and search for "Flex Friday." That'll pull up all of our upcoming offerings.
For more details, take a look at our Flex Fridays article!
Q: How can I get a transcript of my student's work?
A: To request a transcript, please please schedule a time to meet with our Academic Counselor.
She'll review the process with you to make sure you know what to expect.
After your discussion, our team will transcribe your student's academic record and share it with your family.
Q: What's 'experience based learning'? How do I add it to my student's course load?
A: Experience based learning is a term used to cover a large variety of enriching, hands-on activities that OpenEd students can pursue for credit (with approval from our Academic Counselor).
Some examples of learning experiences that OpenEd Academy students have completed include piano lessons, ballet class, and martial arts training.
To submit a request to add an experience based learning opportunity to your student's course load, go to the Marketplace menu option through the OpenEd platform and search for "experience based learning."
You can select from 1 credit, 0.5 credit, or 0.25 credit options.
After you add the appropriate credit amount to your cart and fill in a few details about your student's experience based learning, our team will review your request.
Q: What's 'parent supplied curriculum'? How do I add it to my student's course load?
Parent supplied curriculum is external curriculum designed by you in collaboration with your student’s teacher.
To submit a request to add parent supplied curriculum to your student's course load, go to the Marketplace menu option through the OpenEd platform and search for "parent supplied curriculum."
You can select from 1 credit, 0.5 credit, or 0.25 credit options.
