4.3 High School Experience Overview (Utah, Grades 9-12)

If your student is in grades 9-12 and enrolled in OpenEd, they are a part of an open and flexible high school journey.

Students who choose this journey can still get into a great college (and regularly do!). We recommend contacting any colleges that your student is considering to ask the question: “What if my child does their schooling at home and doesn’t have a formal high school transcript? Can my student still attend your university?”

Most higher education institutions will provide a way, whether by reviewing a portfolio of work, requiring a high ACT or SAT score, or asking for a transcript of any early college credits earned by your student.

We recommend contacting the universities your student is interested in to verify their entrance requirements.

What This Pathway Means For Your Student

Certificate of Completion

Your student won't earn a state-certified diploma from their school of enrollment.

Your student will earn an OpenEd Certificate of Completion, representing the culmination of their academic achievement.

Wider Curriculum Options

In this pathway, students aren't limited to the curriculum options that diploma-seeking students need to stick to.

Your student can utilize any of the curriculum options available in our marketplace, including:

  • Early college credit options
  • On-site split enrollment classes
  • CTE courses
  • Publicly available classes in your community
  • Educational curriculum and resources available outside of OpenEd
  • Technical college courses (which are FREE in Utah)

Greater Flexibility

Students might choose this pathway for greater flexibility in tailoring their curriculum to their interests and goals.

Without the requirements of a traditional program, your student's academic journey can be uniquely tailored to fit their needs.

Changed your mind?

This pathway is designed for students who plan to earn a homeschool diploma rather than a traditional state-certified diploma.

If your student decides they would prefer to pursue a traditional diploma pathway, a transition may be possible between school years, depending on the policies and requirements of the program they enroll in. Mid-year changes are typically not permitted.

If your long-term goal is a fully traditional, state-certified diploma program, we encourage you to carefully review available options to ensure the pathway you choose aligns with those goals from the start.

If you’d like help thinking through what makes the most sense for your student, we’re happy to talk it through with you.
