5.7 Local Performance Requirement Log (Oregon)
Watch: What To Know About The Local Performance Requirement
The Oregon Department of Education requires all public school students in grades 3-8 to complete a Local Performance Requirement each school year.
This requirement is incorporated into a weekly learning log.
Timeline:
- February 17th: Local Performance Requirement log becomes available to submit
- March 9th: Local Performance Requirement Requirement log is due
- April 3rd: Your student will receive feedback on the Local Performance Requirement log from their teacher by this date at the latest (Note: They might receive feedback sooner!)
Please note: Students in grades K-2 are not required to complete the Local Performance Requirement; their learning log will be in the regular format.
What To Expect From The Local Performance Requirement Log
The Local Performance Requirement includes two parts:
- Completing a few grade-specific math, science, and writing questions
- Delivering a short speech on a topic of your student's choice, to an audience of their choice
In the Local Performance Requirement log, we'll give you a direct link to the questions that your student needs to answer.
Your student will be asked to check a box to confirm that they've completed the Local Performance Requirement.
They'll also be asked to share a 3-5 sentence highlight from their speech. This could be an actual excerpt, or a few details about the experience.
If your student wants to, they can also upload a copy of their Local Performance Requirement and/or their speech for their teacher to see - but this is optional.
What To Know About Your Student's Speech
The format and time frame of your student's speech is flexible.
They can give the speech at any point during the school year - it doesn't need to happen strictly within the window of the Local Performance Requirement log.
For example: If your student gave a presentation about their favorite animal at your family dinner table in the Fall, they could use that experience as the speech portion of the Local Performance Requirement.
Examples of 3-5 Sentence Speech Reflections
"I gave my speech about what it was like for my family to get a puppy! I talked about how it's a big responsibility, but it's also really rewarding. I spent a long time picking out our puppy's name, because that felt like a big responsibility, too. I gave my speech to my friends."
"My speech was about deciding which color to paint my room. It was a hard decision because I share a room with my sister. I wanted it to be bright pink, and she wanted it to be blue. We decided to paint it green, because we both like green. I gave my speech to my grandparents, and I was a little nervous to talk on my own for that long, but they were smiling the whole time."
"I talked about how to play my favorite board game in my speech. I gave the speech to my mom, and I explained all the rules really well. By the end, she knew how to play the board game, too. I like how my speech turned out and I'm proud of myself."
