6.2 ILEARN Checkpoints (Indiana)

ILEARN Checkpoints are formative, low-stakes assessments designed to: 

  • Measure student understanding of grade-level standards in ELA and math at key points during the school year.
  • Identify learning gaps early so teachers can adjust instruction or provide targeted intervention.

Q: Which students need to take the ILEARN Checkpoints?

A: Indiana students in grades 3-8 will need to take these Checkpoint assessments.

Q: When will this assessment be administered? 

A: The ILEARN Checkpoint assessment is administered three times a year in the Fall, Winter and Spring.

Q: Is this assessment virtual or in-person? 

A: This assessment is administered virtually. 

Q: How do I schedule this assessment? 

A: Scheduling will be available directly through the Assessments tab of your OpenEd platform.

Q: What should my student expect during the assessment? How long will it take?

A: 

Practice test: Students will log in through the Cambium secure browser using their first name, Student Testing Number (STN), and Session ID. Students will explore the testing platform and become comfortable with the tools and question formats they’ll see on the real assessment. They will practice navigating features like highlighting, calculators, and text-to-speech. The practice test isn’t scored—it’s designed to help students gain confidence, reduce test-day anxiety, and ensure they understand how to use the system before taking the official ILEARN assessment.

The practice test takes about one hour to complete (including both ELA and Math).

ILEARN Checkpoint: Students log in through the Cambium Secure Browser using their First Name, STN and Session ID. They complete two short, computer-adaptive, untimed tests; one in English Language Arts (ELA) and one in Math.

Each test consists of approximately 20-25 questions, designed to take about 30–60 minutes. The checkpoints are low-stakes, meaning they don’t affect grades. The tests provide a low-pressure environment for students to gauge their progress.
