6.4 IREAD (Indiana)

IREAD is used to ensure that students have mastered essential reading skills by the end of third grade.

It also helps to identify students who might need some extra support in reading before they move on to more advanced skills in fourth grade.

Q: Which students need to take the IREAD assessment? 

A: The state of Indiana requires all grade 2 students and students in grades 3 through 6 who have not yet taken or passed IREAD to take the assessment.

Q: Are students who are transferring from out-of-state or homeschool or non-accredited schools required to take IREAD?

A: Yes. Any NEW students (i.e. out of state, out of the country or homeschool transfer) in grades four through six are required to participate each spring and summer administration until they pass or are promoted to grade 7.

Q: When will IREAD be administered? 

A: For the 25-26 school year, IREAD will be administered once in the Spring.

If your student doesn’t pass the assessment, they can retake it during a retest window over the Summer.

Q: Is IREAD virtual or in-person? 

A: IREAD is administered in-person. 

Q: How do I schedule IREAD?

Q: What should my student expect? How long will IREAD take?

A: IREAD is divided into three short, untimed sections that generally take about twenty minutes each. Students usually finish the whole assessment in about an hour. 

Your student will take this assessment on a computer using the secure Cambium browser. Before the test begins, a proctor will help your student log in and review some directions. 

Each section of the assessment will include some reading passages and multiple-choice questions focused on phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Students work independently and at their own pace; they can take short breaks between sections.

A: A laptop will be provided to your student when they arrive at the testing site. This laptop will already be set up with everything they need to take the assessment.
