6.5 IREAD Interventions & Summer Retesting (Indiana)

If your student didn't pass the most recent testing window of IREAD, our team is here to help.

Intervention Program

Program dates: April 13 - May 22

Starting in April, OpenEd will offer a live intervention program focused on strengthening foundational reading skills.

Students will receive targeted reading instruction aligned with the Science of Reading, along with guided practice using IREAD-style questions.

During the program dates, virtual 45-minute sessions will take place Monday - Thursday in the morning.

Next Steps For Your Family

If your student didn’t pass IREAD, they’ll have the opportunity to retake the test over the summer.

Summer retest windows:

  • Wednesday, May 27 - Friday, June 5
  • Monday, June 15 - Friday, June 26

IREAD Summer Retest FAQs

Q: Is my student required to retake the IREAD test this summer?

A: If your student is in 2nd grade for the 25-26 school year, they are not required
to retake IREAD this summer (but they’re welcome to). If you’d prefer, they can
wait to retake IREAD next Spring as a 3rd grader.

If your student is in grades 3-6 for the 25-26 school year, they are required to
retake IREAD this summer.

Q: How many times can my student retake IREAD this summer?

A: If your student is in 2nd grade, they can retake IREAD once this summer.

If your student is in grades 3-6 and they don’t pass IREAD after their first
retake session, they can then schedule a second one at any point during our
summer retest windows. (Please wait to receive your student’s results before
scheduling a second session.)

Understandably, families sometimes sign up for multiple locations and then
later decide which session they plan to attend. To help us appropriately staff
each testing location, we’d appreciate it if you only signed up for one session
at a time.

If your plans change, you can always cancel your original appointment and
schedule another one!

Q: When will I receive my student’s results? How can I view them?

A: Most families can expect to see results within 48 hours of testing.

To view your results, you’ll log into the Indiana Family Portal using a six-
character access code (we'll email this to you).

Q: What will this experience look like for my student?

A: IREAD consists of three short, untimed sections that include reading passages
and multiple-choice questions focused on phonics, vocabulary, and
comprehension.

Each of these sections typically take about twenty minutes to complete. Your
student may take brief breaks between each section.

To make sure they don’t feel rushed, your student’s session will be scheduled to
be two hours long – but most students finish within ninety minutes.

If your student finishes early, they’re welcome to exit the testing area (provided
that it doesn’t disrupt other testers).

Q: Can my student bring a snack?

A: Your student can bring a light snack with them for before or after their test (or
during a break), but no food is allowed in the computer area when testing.

Q: How can my student prepare for their IREAD retake test?

A: Until May 22nd, our team is holding an IREAD intervention program from
Monday to Thursday, 11 AM - 11:45 AM ET. Check your email for the Zoom link to join.

Your student has access to a Lexia account for independent, personalized
reading practice at home – access instructions can be found in the Library
tab of your OpenEd platform.

Your student is also welcome to join our drop-in tutoring sessions for
additional group reading skills support; here are our topics for May.
