Canvas is the Learning Management System that RISE students use to submit their assignments, monitor their grades, and receive helpful feedback from their teachers.
You’ll access Canvas through a platform called Clever.
Getting Started
Visit clever.com/in/opened and enter the login credentials that were sent to your student’s RISE email account. (Typically, this email follows the format of FirstName.LastName@riseonlinestudent.org.)

After logging in, you'll see a few different apps under the More Apps section. Click on Canvas.
That'll take you straight to your Canvas dashboard, where you'll see your student's courses!
To view a course's assignments, click on the course's name. Then, click Modules.
Tip: Keep an eye on the To Do and Recent Feedback sections in the top right corner of your dashboard.
That's an easy way to view upcoming due dates and track any comments left by your student's teacher!
How To Set Up An Observer Account
As a parent, you've got the option to sign up for an observer account.
Observers can link their Canvas account to their student's, viewing assignment due dates, announcements, and other course content (without being able to participate in it yourself).
First, visit https://opened.instructure.com/login/canvas and click on Parent of a Canvas User? Click Here For An Account from the top right corner.
Fill in the required fields, including the Student Pairing Code. This is how your new account will connect to your student's account.
How do I find my Student Pairing Code?
In your student's Canvas account, click on the Account menu option from the lefthand sidebar. Then, click Settings.
On the right side of the page, you'll see a button labeled Pair with Observer. Click this button to generate the code.

Once you're done, click Start Participating. That'll create your new Observer account!
FAQs
Q: Where can my student find their username and password for Canvas?
A: Students don't have separate usernames and passwords for Canvas - all students will get to Canvas through Clever!
Q: I don't see all of my student's classes on their Canvas dashboard. How can I fix that?
A: Through the lefthand sidebar, select the Courses option. Then, click All Courses.
Under the Favorite column, click the star icon next to each class so that the star turns orange.
That will make sure all of your student's classes appear on their dashboard!
Q: Where can my student find their work for the day?
A: From the lefthand sidebar, click on the Dashboard option. Then, click on the name of a class.
In the top left corner, click on Modules. That will show your student all of their upcoming assignments for the class.
Q: My student is confused about how to submit an assignment. What should we do?

Q: My student is getting too many email notifications. Can I change that?
A: Yep! To edit your notifications settings, click on the Account menu option. Then, click Notifications.
From there, you can decide what you'd like to receive notifications about (and how often).
