1.6 High School Sports (Oregon)

If your student is in grades 9-10, they may be able to participate in sports at your resident/boundary public school.

Is My Student Eligible To Play Sports?

The requirements for participation, and subsequent approval, are entirely up to your district.

Please reach out directly to your local school's athletics office to ask:

  1. Whether a student enrolled through Nyssa Virtual School can participate in OSAA-sanctioned athletics
  2. Whether your district requirements any kind of enrollment, check-in, or attendance in order to be eligible (the answer must be no)

Some sports might have some additional requirements (like rules set by OSAA or by college athletics organizations).

Especially if your student is pursuing NCAA eligibility, reach out to the school early to make sure your family has plenty of time to fulfill those qualifications!

Important: To stay enrolled with OpenEd, your student can't be enrolled anywhere else.

If your local district tells you that your student needs to enroll with them in order to participate in sports, then unfortunately your student won't be able to join.

What's Needed From You

For your student to join local sports, you'll need to do two things:

1. Submit the School Representation Eligibility Certificate

Download the certificate here and fill in your information. (We filled in a few details to get you started, including the name of your student's school of enrollment.)

Submit this certificate to OpenEd by emailing us here

We'll send the certificate back to you once Nyssa Virtual School has signed it. You can then provide the completed certificate to your local boundary school.

2. Make Sure Your Student Is In Good Standing

Students who join local sports need to remain in good standing with OpenEd, which means submitting all of your learning logs on time.

We also strongly recommend that your high school student participate in Interim Assessments to make sure they remain eligible to keep playing sports in the future.

Private School Athletics

Because your student is enrolled as a full-time student through a public school, participation in private school athletics is likely not allowable, but it is up to the discretion of the private school.

Please reach out to the private school directly to ask about their eligibility requirements.

FAQs

Q: Does OpenEd “approve” sports eligibility?

A: No. OpenEd can’t approve or deny athletics eligibility. Your local district (and/or the governing athletic body) decides.

Q: If my district says “yes,” is that guaranteed?

A: No. Policies can vary and can change. Always confirm with the district and keep a copy of any written guidance you receive.

Q: What if the district says my student must enroll there to play?

A: If enrollment at the district school is required, that would be split/dual enrollment and would not be compatible with staying enrolled through OpenEd in Oregon.
